How would you describe yourself?
I’m a Virgo with Leo tendencies: compulsive overachiever dreaming of being free and independent, both shy and desirous to be extravert. I love all things nature, from cooking vegan to spending time outdoors, and all things homemade. I guess I’m a little home-bird at heart.
How did you become interested in food writing and developing recipes?
I grew up watching Jamie Oliver, Bill Granger and Nigella Lawson on the BBC, and when I was 17 I saw Julie & Julia at the cinema, which inspired me to start making cakes and desserts for my family. When I moved out of home, I needed to learn to cook healthily for myself – that’s when I went vegan and really claimed ownership of my kitchen and my health.
Where do you get your recipe ideas?
Everywhere and anywhere: TV programmes, magazines, something my mother or grandmother used to make for me, something I’ve seen in a shop or had in a restaurant. Often I am driven by a desire to eat something I can’t because it’s not vegan, so I have to make my own version to enjoy it.
What’s your favourite cookbook?
I can’t answer this question! I have so many – probably a lot more than a student is meant to have. At the moment, it probably is Honestly Healthy by Natasha Corrett and Vicki Edgson (published by Jacqui Small L.L.P.): it is the first book in the UK that contains an overwhelming amount of vegan recipes and focuses on alkaline foods.
What do you like to do when you’re not testing recipes and writing?
Words are my first love: I decided I wanted to be a writer when I was 8 years old. Nothing beats getting lost in a good story, whether I am writing or reading it. You can find me practicing yoga most days, and I like to try my hand at knitting as well.
