Author interview
How would you describe yourself?
I admire spontaneity and love it when things go right. I have been told I am a good listener.
How did you become interested in food writing and developing recipes?
I think it all began when I was too lazy to go round the shop to buy yet more food. I would look in the fridge and cupboards and think of what I could knock up. Surprisingly, there would be so many foods I could put together that I hadn’t thought of before. I enjoyed experimenting and began to write down my recipes.
Where do you get your recipe ideas?
From my Mum. She never entertained a ready meal in her life. Her cooking was plain, wholesome and filling.
What’s your favourite cookbook?
Forgotten Skills of Cooking by Darina Allen.
What do you like to do when you’re not testing recipes and writing?
When I am not ferrying around my three teenage children, I love playing the flute and banjo. I play by ear and find it therapeutic. It’s a fantastic way to clear my mind. I find housework a real chore and would rather do anything else. Medieval churches intrigue me. I love that ancient world that drifts between the devilish and the divine. But above all, spending time with family is my top priority.
